Adds Fediverse Notifications Into Flipboard App Experience

April 11, 2024–Palo Alto, CA–Today Flipboard is federating 400 creators and experts, making their Flipboard profiles and over 11,000 of their curated Flipboard Magazines available to anyone on federated social networks like Mastodon and Threads. And, for the first time, new followers they gain and activity around content they share in the fediverse will be visible and actionable in the Flipboard app.

“This is a major step toward fully federating our platform,” said Mike McCue, Flipboard CEO and co-founder. “We’re not just making curated content on Flipboard viewable, but enabling two-way communication so users can see activity and engage with fediverse communities. Personally it has made my curation even more exciting as I know it’s reaching new people who may share my interests.”

The first community members to be federated include some of the best curators on Flipboard; people sharing stories and videos into Magazines about everything from actions to save our planet, the future of tech, and vegetarian inspiration.  Federating their profiles and Magazines gives them an easy way to join the fediverse and share their passions with new communities.

A significant part of today’s fediverse expansion is focused on creating connections between Flipboard curators and fediverse communities. For federated Flipboard users, today’s app update (version 4.3.25) brings a more integrated experience with the ability to view reactions and conversations from people in the fediverse as well as reply right from their Flipboard notifications. To more easily navigate these new notifications, Flipboard notifications are now organized into three sections:

  • Replies let people see and reply to comments on their posts from people on Flipboard or federated networks, as well as any fediverse @mentions. When they reply it will reflect back into the fediverse, creating an important two-way conversation.
  • Activity displays likes, follows and boosts from people on the fediverse mixed with native Flipboard activity.
  • News, previously titled “Content,” will continue to be a place to see breaking news and stories recommended by the Flipboard editorial team.

Users that are federated will have a new handle that can be followed by people in the fediverse. They can find their new fediverse handle and see how many followers they have in the fediverse right on their Flipboard profile. Additionally, users that do not want to federate their Flipboard account, can easily “unfederate” by toggling off the Federate button in their Flipboard profile settings.

Discover Who’s Now Federated

The first group of federated accounts are all actively involved with the Flipboard community. They are public accounts with two or more public Magazines; they’ve participated in Flipboard community programs, have actively curated in the past 30 days and have had no trust and safety violations on Flipboard. Accounts federated today will receive a welcome email with more information from the Flipboard team.

Below is a sampling of curator Magazines that are now federated. The full list of people federated today can be found here.

The fediverse is a growing ecosystem of social networks where people can connect and converse with each other regardless of the service they use. Over the past 6 months Flipboard has been working in phases to open (federate) its platform, making the profiles and curated Magazines on Flipboard available to anyone on federated networks like Mastodon and Threads.
