Flipboard has been opening its platform to people in the fediverse in phases, and today marks an important milestone: people on Flipboard can follow anyone in the fediverse.
This means you can follow and interact with profiles from Threads*, Mastodon and other federated social services via Flipboard. It includes people like POTUS, Marques Brownlee, George Takei, Taylor Lorenz, and many more. Anyone who is federated is followable on Flipboard, giving Flipboard’s users even more options for people and content to enjoy, all within their Flipboard app.
* Note: Only federated Threads accounts can be discovered, followed and interacted with on Flipboard. If you follow someone on Threads that is not federated, ask them to turn on fediverse sharing on their account so they can be followed on Flipboard.
You can find interesting accounts from the fediverse to follow within Flipboard in three areas:
Explore — Select the Search icon in the bottom navigation and you’ll see a new Fediverse tab. Fediverse profiles are also sprinkled throughout the featured sections in relevant categories.
Community — Select the Home icon and next to your For You feed, you’ll see Community. Updated weekly, this is where Flipboard’s editorial team features the best content collections and profiles to follow.
Search — Type in someone you’re looking for into the search bar and see results under All, or select Social to see results in the new Fediverse Accounts section.
Once you’ve followed accounts from Threads, Mastodon or other platforms in the fediverse, you will see their new posts in the Fediverse Activity carousel in your For You feed. If there is a profile that you never want to miss a post from, add their profile to the top of your Home carousel so you can easily keep up on their social sharing.
You can also flip or add any post from the fediverse to a Flipboard Magazine so this is a great way to share posts you’re interested in.
If your Flipboard account is federated…
If your Flipboard account is already federated, you’ve got a few more features to enjoy with this release.
For one, in addition to being able to follow accounts from the fediverse, you’ll also be able to comment on and like their posts. Having a federated account fully opens up your Flipboard experience and enables you to seamlessly interact with people across the fediverse.
And while you’ve been able to see your fediverse activity in your Flipboard notifications panel, now you’ll be able to follow and interact with people directly from this experience, making it easier to build connections. For example, if someone follows your profile in the fediverse, you can follow them back from Flipboard — it’s all interconnected.
Please note: these features are only available via the latest versions of Flipboard’s iOS and Android apps. And if you’re not federated on Flipboard, but all this goodness is making you wish you were, you can request to federate your account here.
The bottom line is, we want to help you find community and discover interesting content no matter which platform you use. That’s the beauty of the fediverse after all! It doesn’t matter which service you use. You follow someone wherever they are, and you get what they share in your feed. Period. It’s amazing how something so basic feels so fresh, no?
