Hand gripping an Android smartphone, angled with the base closer to the lens, causing screen details to be partially obscured. Faint indications of a Flipboard app logo and an image of a woman holding a phone can be detected on the screen through scattered, colorful light glares.

As you flip through stories on Flipboard, you’re often clicking through to full articles hosted on different websites. What you might not know is that, behind the scenes, Flipboard uses a built-in system browser to load these articles and deliver them to you right inside our app.

Now, Android users can bring the power of their favorite browser — and all its unique features — directly into the Flipboard experience. Whether you’re a die-hard Firefox fan or lean towards Chrome, Edge or Brave, your Flipboard will integrate the browser of your choice.

Every browser comes with its unique set of features and options. Do you use the translation tool in Firefox, or perhaps you love the privacy settings in Brave? You’ll now be able to use those directly within Flipboard. Plus, any of your individual settings, extensions, or add-ons in your chosen browser will automatically apply in Flipboard.

For those subscribed to certain publications, this update also brings convenience. If you are logged into a publication’s website in your default browser, then you won’t need to log in separately in Flipboard.

We’ve tapped into an Android feature known as Custom Tabs for this update, which will also resolve some issues that users have experienced, like slow-loading articles and occasional app crashes. The use of Custom Tabs will provide faster, more stable article rendering.

How to change the default browser on your Android device

It takes just three steps:

1. Make sure your preferred browser is installed on your device.

2. Head into Settings for your device, tap on Apps, and select ‘Choose default apps’.

3. Tap ‘Browser app’ and select the browser of your choice from the list.

Just like that, you’ve personalized all your apps using a browser, including Flipboard!

During testing, we received feedback from several users who preferred to continue using our original interface for viewing articles. We’re providing that option as well. You can switch back to our “legacy web view.” To do this, go to the display settings within the Flipboard app, and select it as your Reading Mode.

One last thing to note: there are a few browsers that don’t support Custom Tabs. If that’s the case for your preferred browser, the legacy web view experience remains when you access articles in Flipboard.

With this update, we are offering you even more ways to make Flipboard your own.
