The American news media, a crucial pillar of our democratic system, is in crisis. The old economic models aren’t working, resulting in mass layoffs of journalists and the shutdown of publications. Audiences are harder to reach, thanks to AI summaries that negate search traffic and social media platforms that deprioritize news. Meanwhile, a large percentage of the public dismisses traditional media as biased and untrustworthy.
Much of this mistrust is a direct result of politics and misinformation. Long before today’s inauguration, President Donald J. Trump has actively worked to discredit journalism. Remember “fake news?” As we usher in his second presidency, Trump and those around him have made it clear they won’t hesitate to attack the Fourth Estate.
As widely reported, media billionaires have proactively taken steps to align their policies with the ascendant conservative movement. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg (who Trump once said should be in jail) killed fact-checking and allowed the return of abusive language on his platforms. Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos controversially nixed the newspaper’s planned endorsement of Kamala Harris just days before the election. Elon Musk’s X promotes misinformation and conspiracy theories from the far right.
At Flipboard, we still believe in the value of facts, journalism and open discourse. And we believe all of these things are crucial for democracy during the next four years. We are proud of our longstanding relationships with reputable media outlets and are happy to continue our support by sending them traffic and exposing their content to new audiences (something we think our new Surf app will also excel at).
